dc.descriptionJustice Zakeria Yacoob has been a member of the Constitutional Court of South Africa since February 1998, retiring from active service on January 31, 2013. Blind for almost all of his life, Justice Yacoob worked as an advocate for 25 years, using law in the struggle against apartheid and for democracy. He was an executive member of the Natal Indian Congress, of the Durban Detainees' Support Committee, belonged to the Democratic Lawyers Association, and was a member of the underground of the African National Congress. During the transition from apartheid, Justice Yacoob served as a member of the Independent Electoral Commission and of the Independent Panel of Experts that advised the National Assembly on the drafting of the post-apartheid South African Constitution.en_US
